Clinical Case Study: Sickle Cell Anemia
Eric is a doctor of internal medicine and has a patient that complains of constant fatigue, painful swelling of extremities, and yellowing of the skin and white areas of the eyes. The patient reveals that she had been diagnosed several years before with Sickle-Cell Anemia. However, she admits that her diagnosis was explained in very complex medical terms to her, and that she still has a very poor understanding of her condition. Help Eric explain the causes of Sickle Cell Anemia and what symptoms can be expected.
Case Background
Sickle-cell Anemia is a condition that is caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for the protein Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a carrier protein that has a quaternary structure that consists of four chains of amino acids and is used in red blood cells to transport both Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. The genetic mutation that causes Sickle-cell Anemia results in the substitution of a single incorrect amino acid in the Hemoglobin protein. This substitution reverses the solubility of Hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to morph into a sickle shape. These red blood cells get trapped in capillaries and rupture, leading to pain, swelling, and Anemia.
