Module 12 Case Study
Clinical Case Study
Crystal works as a nurse practicioner in a busy pediatrics practice in Monroe, Louisiana. A family with three boys, aged 4, 8, and 10, has come in because the youngest boy’s pre-school teacher had noticed that he had difficulty getting up from a sitting position after story-time. Instead of standing right up, the boy had to prop himself up first on all fours, then use his hands on his thighs to climb his leg and ultimately stand upright. The teacher also noticed, compared to other kids of his age, the boy had very large gatrocnemius muscles. As an experienced healthcare professional, Crystal is alarmed by what she has heard and orders a blood panel. As she suspected, the 4-year old boy had abnormally high levels of creatine kinase (CK).
