Module 17: Mental Health

Cognitive and mental health are essential components of a client's overall well-being and quality of life. In order to provide compassionate and evidence-based care that promotes safety and reduces stigma, nurses need to understand cognitive function and mental illness. Emphasis on care is placed on therapeutic communication, patient-centered care, and collaboration with other disciplines to meet the needs of individuals who are experiencing cognitive or mental health challenges. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

1.  Identify risk factors for cognitive impairments (Course Outcome # 4)
2.  Identify cues related to cognitive impairments across the life span (Course Outcome # 4)
3.  Identify evidence-based interventions to support diverse clients (individual, family, or group) with cognitive impairments (Course Outcome # 4, 6)
4.  Contribute to a plan of care for clients with cognitive and sensory impairments (Course Outcome # 4)
5.  Include adaptations to the environment to maintain safety for the client with impaired cognition (Course Outcome # 1, 2)
6.  Incorporate nursing strategies to maximize cognitive functioning (Course Outcome # 4)
7.  Outline resources for clients with a cognitive impairment and their family members or caregivers (Course Outcome # 3, 6)

To achieve these objectives: 

1. Read the Module # 17 Introduction.
2. Read Chapter #6 Cognitive Impairment in the textbook, Introduction to Practical Nursing.
3. Complete the quiz.
