Food can serve as a medium for the growth of microorganisms, including those that cause spoilage and foodborne illness. In this lab, students will examine microbial growth in food samples and explore how microorganisms contaminate food during handling, processing, and storage. Through observation and analysis, students will gain insight into food safety principles and the role of microbiology in preventing foodborne disease.By the end of this lab, students will be able to:
- Perform serial dilutions accurately
- Calculate CFUs per milliliter of a food sample
- Compare microbial loads in different foods
- Explain how pasteurization affects microbial growth
