Module 8 Assignment on Infection
Instructions
Step One:
Go to the faces of sepsis in the sepsis alliance. You joined this organization in Module One and already created a username and password. Read the sepsis story of Erin Flatley. Her father helped to form the sepsis alliance after her sepsis-related death. Now find one faces of sepsis story of your own and read the story. Scroll down and load more stories until you find one sepsis story that you connect with. Take time to explore the website and resources.

Step Two:
Now create a slide share presentation with narration to describe a plan of care for anyone with sepsis/septic shock. Apply your readings from Module Nine, from a literature search, and from the sepsis alliance for health professionals. This assignment addresses Course Learning Outcome 2 and digital skills.
You are to have a total of 11 slides minimum to include:
1. Cover Slide (title, name, class, and date)
2. Description of Sepsis Story you researched (not Erin’s)
3. Describe the pathophysiology of sepsis and how it relates to your sepsis story. Include how sepsis will be revealed in your head-to-toe assessment.
4. History Slide
a. Describe and list all the history assessments you will make in any patient who presents with signs of sepsis. Think of all the things that could cause sepsis. Example: recent surgery. Narration: This allows for portal of entry of microbes. Gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and thoracic surgeries are highest risk.
5. Defining Characteristics Slide
a. Describe and list all the signs and symptoms you will assess in sepsis. Example: Patient reports a pain of “10”. Narration: Pain is associated with swelling from fluids shifting out of the blood vessels causing pressure on nerves which cause pain.
6. Diagnostic Test and Treatments Slide
a. Describe and list all the tests or treatments that may be ordered. Example: CT and intubate. Narration: It is important to find the cause of sepsis quickly and CT will find post operative infection complications.
b. Include SIRS, quick SOFA, and Full SOFA assessment tools.
7. Labs Slide
a. List and explain all the labs that could be ordered. Make sure to let us know what is ordered within the first hour of identifying sepsis. Explain why the lab is relevant, why it changes in sepsis, and what one expects the lab value to be in the state of sepsis. Share the normal ranges. Example: Lactate. Narration: Lactate will elevate in sepsis because with sepsis-impaired perfusion, the cells convert from aerobic metabolism to anaerobic metabolism and create lactic acid which causes the body to create the buffer lactate. Levels 2.0 mmol/L and above are signs of sepsis and levels 4.0 mmol/L or greater indicate septic shock.
8. Medications Slide
a. List and describe all the possible medications that could be given for a patient with sepsis or septic shock. Example: Two Broad Spectrum antibiotics (empiric). Narration: These are given within the first hour of identifying sepsis. These are only a medication based on a hunch as it is associated with the suspected or known origin. Once the culture results are returned, the antibiotics will convert to targeted antibiotics.
9. Interventions Slide
a. List and describe all the interventions and especially the best practice interventions in sepsis. Make sure to include sepsis prevention and antibiotic stewardship measures. Example: Handwashing. Narration: This is the most important intervention in prevention of the spread of infection. Posting reminder signs in patient rooms is helpful. Have hand washing stations and hand sanitizer available in every room.
10. Outcomes Slide
a. List and describe all the expected outcomes the nurse will desire to show the patient is improving. Example: Respiratory rate will be 12-20 breaths per minute. Narration: This shows that oxygenation has improved and leaking of fluid in the lungs has decreased.
11. References Slide
a. Use APA citations. Make sure any links in citations are active.
b. Have a minimum of 6 citations including your open-source text.
Step Three
Upload your slide set with narration, saved as mp4 or PowerPoint show, to the assignment area. Make sure your narration is audible and clear. Make sure your slides are neat and meet all expectations in the instructions. Follow the assignment rubric to earn full points. Make sure to conduct research on this subject and create an extensive plan of care. Do not wait until the last minute to begin this assignment. Reach out to the instructor for any questions. This is due Sunday midnight of week nine (module nine). Late assignment will have a 10% deduction each day late unless an extension agreement with the instructor is made in advance of the due date. Assignments submitted more than 7 days late will not be graded.

|---|---|---|
| 1. Cover Slide | Includes title, student name, class, and date. | 1 |
| 2. Sepsis Story Slide | Clearly describes a chosen Sepsis story (not Erin’s); emotionally and clinically relevant connection is made. | 9 |
