Learning Objectives Addressed:
-
Identify factors putting clients at risk for mobility problems
-
Identify cues related to mobility problems

Overview
Mobility plays a critical role in maintaining a client’s physical, emotional, and functional well-being. As nurses, it is essential to recognize when a patient’s mobility is impaired, assess risk factors early, and initiate prompt, evidence-based interventions to prevent complications such as pressure injuries, pneumonia, constipation, contractures, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Before implementing any mobility-related interventions, a thorough musculoskeletal and functional mobility assessment is required. This forum will help you strengthen your clinical reasoning and develop safe, patient-centered strategies for managing mobility challenges.
Discussion Instructions
After completing the assigned readings on Musculoskeletal Anatomy, Functional Mobility, and the Effects of Immobility, respond to the following prompt in paragraph form:
Discussion Prompt
-
Identify one clinical situation (from personal experience, class simulation, lab, or observation) where a patient demonstrated impaired mobility.
-
Describe at least two assessment findings that indicated mobility was a concern.
-

-
Reflect: What might be the consequences if nursing staff delay or overlook these mobility needs?
