Define Key Digital Literacy Concepts
Why Digital Literacy Maters
You might know your way around Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat—but digital literacy goes far beyond likes, posts, and stories. It’s about finding trustworthy information, understanding how media shapes opinions, and using technology to learn, work, and communicate effectively in the real world. This activity will help you see where your strengths are and where you can grow.
Define Key Digital Literacy Concepts
Activity: Social Media vs. Digital Literacy Concept Map
- Create a concept map—a visual diagram that shows how ideas are connected. In a concept map, you put the main topic in the center (e.g., “Digital Literacy”), then branch out to related ideas (e.g., “Information Literacy,” “Media Literacy,” “Technological Literacy”). From each branch, you add definitions, examples, and visuals.
- Example: In the center, write “Media Literacy.” Branch out to “Definition,” “Social Media Example,” and “School Example.” Under “Social Media Example,” you might write “Recognizing a fake news story on Instagram.”
- For each of the three main concepts—Information Literacy, Media Literacy, Technological Literacy—do the following:
- Define the term in your own words.
- Give one example from your social media life.
- Give one example from your academic or professional life.
- Add one image or icon that represents the concept.
Utilize a tool like Canva to create your concept map, or hand draw one.
