Module 6 Discussion Forum on Binary Operations
Assessment
This activity will assess the following learning objectives:
- Compute a binary operation for a defined operation.
- Determine if a binary operation holds true for the commutative, associative, distributive, identity and closure properties.
- Compute addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems using various strategies with or without technology.
- Be able to connect the current Louisiana Student Standards and NCTM Standards to the course content.
- Express mathematical ideas clearly and correctly both orally and in writing, for purposes of mathematics instruction.
Forum Instructions
[ADOPTING INSTRUCTOR: Remove or Edit the following instructions as desired].
In a post below, respond to the following prompt. Then, you must respond to (X) of your classmates' posts. After you post a response, you will be able to see other responses. You are not required to post more than once, but feel free to respond to other posts and engage with your classmates
Your [first] post is due on [day of week] by [time] CST. Your response to another student is due on [day of week] by [time] CST. [Adjust for number of posts required.]
Your response should be at least 3-4 complete sentences. Feel free to write your response as a discussion between you and the student. You are encouraged to include images of manipulatives in your explanation. (If desired, use Polypad Amplify Classroom to create images.) Use good English grammar, correct punctuation, and complete sentences. As a teacher you will be expected to speak and write with correct grammar, so you might as well start practicing now!
For your responses to the other students, you will need to test their operation for the commutative, associative, and closure properties. Your response to the other students' post should explain why the operations do or do not hold. A simple “I agree” or “Yes” or “LOL” will not count. Please reply thoughtfully and courteously, according to netiquette rules. Remember, all of you are new to explaining mathematics with words and this is your chance to build up that skill before you step into the classroom!
Prompt
Define your own unique operation "#". You should use at least two variables and at least one operation - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or an exponent. (For example: # is defined as a # b = 3a2 - 4b)
