Scenario:

You are a Registered Nurse (RN) working in a busy outpatient clinic in Louisiana. A patient arrives visibly dehydrated and in need of immediate intravenous fluids. An unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) offers to start the IV line, stating they have done it many times in previous jobs. You are aware that this task is outside their legal scope of practice, but you are managing multiple patients and feel pressure to provide care quickly.

Discussion Prompt:
How should you respond in this situation? Consider your legal responsibilities and ethical obligations as an RN. In your response, address the following:

What do the Louisiana Nurse Practice Act and the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN) say about delegation and IV therapy?
Which provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses apply to this ethical dilemma?
As an RN, how do you uphold patient safety and professional accountability when facing pressure to delegate outside of scope?
